MEL Role: MEL has been involved with this scheme from tender to post completion
management stage allowing the maximisation of the ecological benefits
without disturbing the road construction.
Providing creative ecological solutions.plants and invertebrates. The scale of the development (20 years) creates
ecological issues as many temporary habitats are created during the
development with biodiversity value.
Master planning
Habitat creation and design (with Gillespies)
Development and implementation of the site BAP
Protection of ecological interests during the construction work
Dealing with other planning issues
and naturally developing habitats over PFA-based substrate.
The site is adjacent to Medway Estuary and Marshes SSSI/ SPA/RAMSAR
site and existing ecological mitigation areas from a nearby development
Protected species include reptiles, water vole, great crested newts,
breeding and wintering birds, rare and unusual invertebrates
The site is also used for foraging bats and badgers.
final scheme layout.
Completion of ecological surveys
Development of an Ecological Impact Assessment as part of the
Environmental Statement produced for the site.
Completion of a Stage 1 Appropriate Assessment with respect to the
proposals, development of ecological mitigation strategies and
production of habitat management plan.
