Stephen Martin, patron of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, was awarded the medal in recognition of his vision and determination to convert a quarry site, owned by Humberside Aggregates, into a large and complex wetland, today known as North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve. Starting out as a series of sand and gravel quarries, North Cave Wetlands is now a thriving bird reserve, with over 213 species recorded including the once highly threatened avocet breeding on site. Stephen Martin said on receiving the award: “I was thrilled to hear that we were selected for the award, but wanted to ensure it recognised the partnership consisting of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, local volunteers, Humberside Aggregates and more recently Middlemarch Environmental and their staff, the partnership that has so successfully created North Cave Wetlands.” Thanks to Stephen’s enthusiasm to make North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve a success a further agreement has been reached with Humberside Aggregates to convert further phases of the quarry into extensions of the existing nature reserve. The Cadbury Medal is an annual award given in recognition of services to nature conservation and outstanding contribution to the work of The Wildlife Trusts.

Middlemarch Environmental and MOLA have teamed up to provide a streamlined service for their client Hurley Palmerflatt, which offered a joint approach to pre planning site investigations. Both organisations have worked together on several large development projects where both archaeological and ecology impact statements were a requirement for planning purposes.
Middlemarch Environmental and MOLA began working on Project Fox in 2011, it is a extremely sensitive site, which Middlemarch has approached with a great deal of professionalism. Middlemarch has been involved with the ecology, landscape, and arboricultural works required for this project, such as bat, badger and reptile surveys. Huw Sherlock, Regional Manager for MOLA in the Midlands and Wales undertook the archaeological site works for Project Fox
"The advice and service Middlemarch and MOLA has provided has been exceptional, but also delivered on time. The support and assistance from both teams meant the budget for this project has been on target and efficiently managed." Jonathan Blake - Hurley Palmerflatt.

1st European Biodiversity Summit, 17/18 April, 2012, Stuttgart, Germany.
Dr Derek Whatling is presenting the Middlemarch Environmental Ltd Toolkit for Assessing Biodiversity in the Supply Chain (TABS) at the 1st Biodiversity Summit in Stuttgart, Germany.
The European Biodiversity Summit is the main event of the European Business & Biodiversity Campaign and an outstanding opportunity for corporations from all sectors to demonstrate their leadership in sustainability and biodiversity.
The Summit will provide the forum for participants to engage with representatives from the corporate sector, NGOs, politicians and scientists through plenary sessions, diverse expert workshops and a market place exposition (Expo). The workshops will focus on business and biodiversity related topics, ranging from legal compliance and biodiversity financing to supply chain management and the valuation of nature.
Dr Whating will speak at the ‘Transparent Supply Chains’ workshop. Supply chain transparency requires detailed information on the situation relating to biodiversity in the supply chain. The TABS methodology provides that information, essential for good management decisions, and focuses resources where they are most effective in reducing risks and providing opportunities for good business and biodiversity consideration.
