Middlemarch Environmental has over ten licensed bat surveyors across England, and three licensed surveyors for Wales! Our company has invested time into these individuals to allow them to obtain their bat survey licences in these countries.
Bats, and the places they use for shelter or protection (i.e. roosts), are protected by UK legislation. It is illegal to kill, injure, capture or disturb bats, or damage/destroy/obstruct access to a bat roost.
Middlemarch undertakes over 300 bat surveys each year! Types of surveys we undertake include:
Bat roost surveys, to include preliminary roost appraisals and presence / absence surveys;
-Tree climbing and confined spaces bat surveys
-Detailed endoscope surveys of buildings
-Bat activity surveys, to include transects and the use of static detectors
Sites on which bats are found to be present will require one our licensed surveyors to project manage the development to ensure that our clients are conforming to the relevant legislation and to the good practice guidelines produced by Natural England and the Bat Conversation Trust. Middlemarch Environmental has been working on railway projects for the past five years. With our experienced team of consultants we undertake a range of ecological surveys and ecological implementation along the railway. With PTS and IWA trained staff we keep costs down for our clients. During works on the East-West railway IWA ecologists surveyed ahead of the vegetation clearance gangs to highlight potential issues quickly and prevent hold ups to the programme.
Our work in Redditch included great crested newt implementation works; fencing, trapping and translocation and supervision, badger surveys, bat surveys; tree climbing and inspections prior to felling and nesting bird surveys. All of these works were completed effectively and efficiently with excellent liaison between ‘on the ground’ contractors and ecologists to ensure everyone understood the mitigation measures.
In addition, we are trained for London Underground (LUCAS) and Docklands Light railway work, enabling us to deal with ecology in London. The greenway contract involved bats with surveys required during night shifts when access to difficult areas was possible, this included abseiling off a bridge!
With our offices spread across the country Middlemarch Environmental are easily situated for National coverage and have experience in dealing with both local and national statutory bodies such as Natural England and local authorities to help ease liaison on complex sites all over the country.

Middlemarch Environmental Ltd is an established ecological consultancy looking to recruit an Arboricultural Consultant to support the fast growing arboricultural division. The post will be based in Coventry, although the successful applicant will be required to travel throughout the UK.
The post would suit a graduate with a Technicians Certificate in Arboriculture. Experience in a similar post would be an advantage but is not essential.
The successful candidate will undertake arboricultural surveys, impact assessments and method statements. An understanding of BS5837:2012 and an awareness of trees in the planning system is essential. The Arboricultural Consultant will also be required to compile reports, letters and proposals and as such good communication skills are essential. Experience of ecological surveying including surveys for bats and knowledge of GIS/CAD systems would be advantageous.
The package will include a competitive salary (£18-24k, dependent on experience and skills) with a performance related bonus available, 24 days holiday, pension and an opportunity for continued professional development.

Business Development Assistant - Coventry
Middlemarch Environmental Ltd is a thriving ecological consultancy and we are seeking to recruit a Business Development Assistant to work as part of our Internal Support Functions.
The candidate needs to be enthusiastic, adaptable and willing to learn. They need to be able to work under pressure and be capable of prioritising tasks and activities in a fast paced environment, ensuring they give attention to detail at all times. The ability to communicate effectively, both face to face and in writing, with our ecology staff and clients is a key requirement. You must be able therefore to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
This new position has been created to provide support directly to the Operations and Marketing/Submissions managers. The main duties will focus around these functions, generally providing support in the development of the company and delivery of projects to tight deadlines. The role will be split between Operations and Submissions/Marketing over the year to maximise efficiencies during seasonal peaks.

British Standard BS42020:2013 ‘Biodiversity Code of Practise for Planning & Development’ - Launched!

British Standard BS42020:2013 ‘Biodiversity Code of Practise for Planning & Development’ has recently been launched.
This new British Standard gives recommendations and provides guidance primarily for ensuring that actions and decisions taken at each stage of the planning process are informed by sufficient and appropriate ecological information. In particular the Standard provides recommendations and guidance to all professionals working in the planning and development sectors who might encounter biodiversity as an issue during the planning, design and implementation aspects of projects that they are involved in.
The recommendations and guiding principles outlined in British Standard BS42020:2013 have been integrated throughout the company and our ecologists are already working in accordance with the guidance provided. Middlemarch Environmental Ltd, based in Allesley, Coventry, is an integrated consultancy and landscaping practice providing creative ecological solutions to clients throughout the UK. Due to our continuing development and expansion, we now have an exciting new post available within the specialism of Wetland Habitat Creation.
This position is particularly suitable for a candidate with a background qualification in environmental science, hydrology, ecology or a related discipline; and ideally have some experience of habitat creation. The candidate may have experience of environmental consultancy however this is not essential as support will be given from both Middlemarch staff and the University of Wolverhampton under the Knowledge Exchange Enterprise Network programme.
Starting salary in the range £20,000 to £23,000, depending on experience.
The successful candidate will be required to hold a valid UK driving licence in order to undertake the travel necessary to develop and manage the partnership element of the project within the UK and abroad.
