1st European Biodiversity Summit, 17/18 April, 2012, Stuttgart, Germany.

Dr Derek Whatling is presenting the Middlemarch Environmental Ltd Toolkit for Assessing Biodiversity in the Supply Chain (TABS) at the 1st Biodiversity Summit in Stuttgart, Germany.

The European Biodiversity Summit is the main event of the European Business & Biodiversity Campaign and an outstanding opportunity for corporations from all sectors to demonstrate their leadership in sustainability and biodiversity.

The Summit will provide the forum for participants to engage with representatives from the corporate sector, NGOs, politicians and scientists through plenary sessions, diverse expert workshops and a market place exposition (Expo). The workshops will focus on business and biodiversity related topics, ranging from legal compliance and biodiversity financing to supply chain management and the valuation of nature.

Dr Whating will speak at the ‘Transparent Supply Chains’ workshop. Supply chain transparency requires detailed information on the situation relating to biodiversity in the supply chain. The TABS methodology provides that information, essential for good management decisions, and focuses resources where they are most effective in reducing risks and providing opportunities for good business and biodiversity consideration.

  • Working Close to Protected Trees

Posted On 9 Jan 2012 by Middlemarch Environmental

Middlemarch Environmental Ltd has extensive experience of working in close association with developers and local authorities to provide Creative Ecological Solutions to potential issues with trees on development sites.

Coventry City Council proposed to construct a new single storey extension a few metres from a visually and culturally important tree which was subject to a Tree Preservation Order at Sacred Heart School in Coventry.

Middlemarch Environmental Ltd in consultation with structural engineers designed a foundation system to prevent damage to the nearby tree during construction and allow it to prosper post-development. This consisted of excavation work being repositioned away from the tree roots, and the final foundation design utilised clay board to create a void beneath the finished floor slab. This will allow the tree to gain valuable nutrients, water and oxygen, ensuring the long term viability of the tree.

Elka Williams (Project Manager, Coventry City Council) worked closely with Middlemarch and stated “Middlemarch’s input was invaluable and allowed us to construct the new school extension whilst retaining and protecting this important tree. I would not hesitate to utilise their services for future projects”

  • Ecological Survey Programme

Posted On 2 Jan 2012 by Middlemarch Environmental

In 2011, Middlemarch Environmental continued their working partnership with BarhaleWSP and Yorkshire Water to support the strategic delivery of their capital works programme at a large number of sites throughout the Yorkshire area.  This included undertaking habitat and protected species and seeking Creative Ecological Solutions for site restoration for over 20 sites in Yorkshire.

Utilising our resources in our northern office, Middlemarch gave the client a team of consultants, lead by Colin Bundy (Principal Ecological Consultant) to implement the work required. Using these resources meant the project targets were met efficiently and promptly. Colin worked closely with BarhaleWSP to ensure all aspects of the project and client expectations were met.

Colin "working directly with the team at BarhaleWSP has meant that we have been able to be proactive in our approach to ensure that survey windows can be met and projects have been able to progress without delay”.

    Quote

"The team at Middlemarch have provided a professional and prompt service on our schemes. The content of the reports has been excellent and importantly recommendations are constructive and pragmatic. We are very grateful for time and effort Middlemarch has put into our working relationship and look forward to working them in the future"
