Carlisle Northern Distributor Road
The Carlisle Northern Distributor Road includes an existing railway bridge that passes over Kingmoor marshalling yard. As part of the works the existing railway bridge had to be demolished and replaced with a wider, more substantial bridge.
A suite of protected species surveys were undertaken and great crested newts were found in a pond within the marshalling yards between two sets of mainline and engineering tracks. Orchids were also noted within the railway embankments. Our work included trapping and translocating a medium population of great crested newts from the pond and translocating the orchids to the adjacent railway embankments that were not affected by the works. Supervision of removal of the topsoil and other features along the railway were then undertaken.
The translocation of both newts and orchids was successful and monitoring of the pond in subsequent years has confirmed the population has not been affected.
