What we do

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (previously known as an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey) is the basic starting point for most ecological assessments of new sites. It is the first step to understanding the ecology on the site and assessing the implications of the proposed development.

It provides a map of the habitats present on a site, and each habitat type is assessed for its potential to support protected or notable species. In addition, a desk study is usually carried out as part of the Preliminary Ecological Appraisal to collect any existing ecological data about the site and its surroundings.

The Preliminary Ecological Appraisal provides information about the baseline ecology of the site based on a single survey visit. The report may highlight the need to complete further surveys to fully inform planning applications.
