Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manages North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve, an ex-mineral extraction site, and so when the opportunity arose to extend the nature reserve through further extraction, they were keen to maintain their involvement.

Middlemarch’s involvement started at an early stage when a system of hydrological monitoring was established and data collected which was then used to complete a feasibility study associated with the creation of 18 ha of wet grassland, a priority habitat for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

Subsequently, a detailed design phase for wet grassland was completed, to provide restored habitat in phases as extraction and restoration works were completed.  In 2010, our wetland specialists oversaw the restoration landforming to create the optimal wet grassland habitat.  The project has been so successful in creating optimal wetland habitats that planning permission has been secured for a further extension to the reserve in Phase III.
